TUTORIAL: Thirteen tutus from curtain samples - Tredici Tutù da campioni di tende

This is a story of a bunch of curtain samples which whished to become famous and dance and twirl on a stage. So they went to a kindergarten and started to scream "Cut me! Cut Me!" until a teacher heard them and gave them to me, asking me to transform them into 

thirteen tutus for the End-Of-School Recital!

Questa è la storia di un gruppo di campioni di tende che avrebbero tanto desiderato diventare famosi e ballare e piroettare su un palco. Quindi andarono in una scuola materna ed iniziarono ad urlare: "Tagliami! Tagliami!" finchè una maestra non li udì e me li diede, chiedendo di trasformarli in 

tredici tutù per il saggio di fine anno!

This is a refashion of the kind I like most: simple but effective and without too much effort!
Follow me in this step by step adventure!

What You Need:

• curtain samples (you can ask to any curtain seller, they have the old collections to be thrown out and you can take them for free!)
• elastic band (2 cm high, about 55 cm for a 4-5 yo - otherwise take your girl's measures)

Step-by-step TUTORIAL

1. Start sewing the elastic into a circular shape, as you would do for any skirt/pant elasticated waist

2. Cut stripes from your curtain samples, trying to obtain slices 5-10 cm wide and 70-80 cm long (you don't need a pic, true? Because I don't have it!!)

3.Fold a strip in half

4. Put the middle point making a loop under the elastic band, like this:

5. Make a knot pulling tails through the loop you made:

6. Finally pull strongly tails, helping you with your right thumb keeping the elastic band flat and the knot well tight (then repeat several times)

 (Go on until you fill all the space available - try not to leave any elastic band visible - I've used about 30 stripes)

Well done!

Now you want to fix your curtain strips to the band, sewing a triple zig-zag (like the one we used on FOE), trying to equally distribute fabric and slightly pulling the elastic band while you sew:

Not too bad, but try not to leave elastic band visible!

You can now check if any strip is too long and need to be cut... I have no pics here too: but with scissors we're all great, uh?

Now you can sit down and admire your thirteen tutus all together (waiting for the day you will see LilPotato and her classmates wearing one of these on stage, on June, 1st):

Questo è uno di quei refashion che mi piacciono tanto: semplice ma efficace e che non costa troppa fatica!

Seguitemi in questa avventura passo a passo!

Cosa vi serve:

• campioni di tende (provate a chiedere a un qualsiasi rivenditore di tende: in genere hanno i campioni delle vecchie collezioni da smaltire e se le danno a voi GRATIS non le devono nemmeno buttare!!!)
• elastico (alto un paio di cm, ne bastano circa 55 cm per una bimba di 4-5 anni, altrimenti misrate la vita della bimba in questione!)

Tutorial passo a passo:

1. Iniziamo cucendo l'elastico in cerchio, come faremmo per gonna o pantaloni con l'elastico in vita

2. Tagliamo a strisce di circa 5-10 cm di larghezza e 70-80 cm di lunghezza i campioni di tende (non vi serve una foto vero? Perchè non ce l'ho!)

3. Pieghiamo una striscia a metà

4. Posizioniamo la gassa corrispondente al centro della striscia sotto alla fascia elastica, così:

5. Annodiamo portando le code all'interno della gassa

6. Aiutandoci col pollice destro a lasciare l'elastico piatto stringiamo per bene il nodo 

(Continuiamo fino a riempire ogni spazio - cerchiamo di non lasciare elastico visibile - io ne ho usate una trentina)

 Ben fatto 

Ora occorre fissare le strisce all'elastico, usando il triplo zig-zag (come quando abbiamo attaccato il FOE), cercando di distribuire equamente la stoffa e tirando leggermente l'elastico mentre si cuce:

Non male, ma l'elastico qui si vede un po' troppo, per i miei gusti!

Controlliamo che la lunghezza delle strisce sia uniforme, eventualmente interveniamo pareggiando quelle più lunghe... anche qui non ho foto: ma con le forbici siam brave, no?

Adesso il tutorial prevede di sedersi ad ammirare i tredici tutù, tutti insieme (attendendo con ansia il giorno in cui LaPatata e le sue compagne ne indosseranno uno sul palco dello spettacolo di fine anno, il primo giugno!):

I'm so sorry I can't post as soon I'd like, but:

1. I've been busy making tutus... thirteen tutus!!! (more details coming soon)
2. my LilPotato is ill (she has a streptococcus sore throat, so she has to take antibiotic...and we don't like it!) 
3. next Sunday Matteo (my partner) will have a Huge Birthday Party (we are talking of about 70 people...) and I'm a little busy cooking, and cooking, and cooking!!! 

But, anyway... I'd like to share my happiness about my participation to an Amazing refashion series hosted from Magda Estrela (House of Estrela)  a really nice portoguese SAHM who has invited me (thank you !! <3) and 19 other bloggers (some of them are on my personal Tailor's Olympo) to write a post about anything refashion related!

Mi scoccia assai non riuscire a postare con la frequenza che vorrei, ma ultimamente:

1. sono stata impegnata nella preparazione di tutù, tredici tutù! (presto maggiori dettagli!)
2. LaPatata è malata (mal di gola da Streptococco, quindi antibiotico...e la cosa non ci piace!)
3. la prossima domenica Matteo (il mio compagno) festeggerà il suo compleanno con una settantina di invitati, quindi ho il mio bel daffare a cucinare, cucinare e ... cucinare!

KCW: better late than never! - Meglio tardi che mai!

This is my summary of what I've sewn on my KCW Spring 2013 (a seasonal sewing challenge, where everyday you commit to spend at least 1 hour sewing for childrens). I wasn't able to sew and share pics straightaway, due to other projects already started, but I'm sharing them now (it's a pic-full long post, so you know it by now :))

Questo è il mio riassunto di ciò che ho cucito per la KCW di primavera 2013 (una sfida di cucito legata alle stagioni, dove ogni giorno ci si impegna a cucire almeno per um'ora abbigliamento per i bambini). Non sono stata in grado di cucire e condividere le foto subito, a causa di altri progetti già avviati, ma li sto condividendo ora (è un post piuttosto lungo, pieno di foto, non dite che non siete avvisati LOL)

Black & White: A Sewing Challenge + minidress tutorial

In March I joined a wonderful Facebook sewing Group (Stitch Once, Rip Twice), thanks to Diane from Diane's Vintage Zest! and I was straightaway involved in a Challenge: The Black and White Challenge, where you had to sew anything you like in black and white in any form: patterns, solids, etc.

I first decided to sew a pair of Peek-a-boo Skinny Pants, having bought the discounted pattern, but the b&w checkered fabric I had on hands wasn't stretchy so I started moving around my new sewing room in progress, between piles and piles of thrifty clothes and scraps of fabrics and I came out waving some old-but-never-worn off-white t-shirts and a pair of too-much-loved and worn out black cotton trousers, with a big rip on the crotch, with an A-line blouse a little bit Sixties in my mind.

I took the princess seams pattern from my Zest & Dusk! spring dress and made some adjustment: no back zipper (due to the t-shirt fabric elasticity), a little shorter on back and a little more on front (achieving a little hi-low hem effect) and took the center front and center back apart, splitting them in two pieces vertically (because the t-shirt wasn't long enough AND I wanted to add ruffles somewhere!).
Here you can see the principal steps on the dressmaking:

• Cut the sides from the pants, laying the pattern pieces on the opened leg:

• cut the front and back center pieces from the t-shirts, cutting two more pieces from the original hem and ruffling with a 1,5-2 ratio

• sew the upper to the ruffle, then the bottom for both front and back center pieces

• sew (or better serge) the ruffle side to the bottom side piece, so won't slide away

• serge the sides to the center pieces (front and back) and topstitch, then sew along the side seams

• Now we can finish both neckline and sleeve edges with knit cuffs, from the same t-shirts, using the same technique of the dolman top, but cutting longer strips (just a little shorter than the edges, because t-shirt knit isn't forgiving as jersey), then press using your new beautiful ham!

• when you serge the cuffs, try not to catch too many fabric's layers, like I did :(

Aaaaargh!

• Try to disguise your disaster, adding fabric embellishment, here and there...

• because one is a defect, two is a pattern!!

Nel mese di marzo sono entrata in un meraviglioso gruppo di cucito su Facebook (Stitch Once, Rip Twice, qualcosa come "cuci una volta, disfa due") grazie a Diane di Diane's Vintage Zest! e sono stata immediatamente coinvolta in una sfida: The Black and White Challenge, dove si doveva cucire qualcosa che ti piacesse in bianco e nero, in qualsiasi forma: tinta unita, fantasia, ecc

Ho in prima battuta deciso di cucire un paio di Skinny Pants di Peek-a-boo, dopo aver comprato il cartamodello in saldo, ma il tessuto a scacchi bianco e nero che avevo tra le mani non era elasticizzato così ho iniziato ad aggirarmi nella mia nuova stanza del cucito in fieri, tra i mucchi e mucchi di vestiti da refashionare e scampoli di tessuti e sono uscita sventolando gloriosamente qualche vecchia-ma-mai-indossata off-white t-shirt e un paio di molto-amati-e-decisamente-lisi pantaloni di cotone nero, con un grande strappo sul cavallo, con una blusa svasata un po 'anni Sessanta in mente.

Ho preso il cartamodello con le cuciture in forma del mio abito primaverile Zest & Dusk!e fatto qualche modifica: tolto la cerniera dietro (vista l'elasticità del tessuto della t-shirt), leggermente più corto sulla schiena e un po' di più sul davanti (per avere un po 'di effetto hi-low sul fondo), poi ho diviso in due i pezzi centrali davanti e dietro (poichè le t-shirt non erano abbastaza alte e poi volevo aggiungere un po' di volant da qualche parte...)

Ecco le fasi principali:

• Tagliare le parti laterali dalla gamba dei pantaloni, aprendo una delle due cuciture per sttenderli piatti sul tavolo

• tagliare il centro davanti ed il centro dietro dalla t-shirt, divisi in due, aggiungendo altri due pezzi dall'orlo originale e arricciando con un rapporto di 1,5-2

• cucire il centro superiore al volant, poi unire il centro inferiore sia per il davanti che per il dietro

• cucire (o meglio usare la tagliacuci) il lato del volant al lato del davanti inferiore, per fare in modo che non si sposti al passo successivo

• unire i fianchi alle parti centrali (anteriori e posteriori) e impunturare, poi unire anche le cuciture dei fianchi

• Ora possiamo finire la scollatura e gli scalfi manica con bordi in maglia, dalla stessa t-shirt, usando la stessa tecnica del Dolman top, ma tagliando strisce più lunghe (solo un po' più corto rispetto ai bordi, perché t-shirt maglia non è perdonando come jersey), quindi stirare bene aiutandoci con il nostro nuovo bel "prosciutto"!

• quando si usa la tagliacuci per unire i bordi, cercare di non prendere troppi strati di tessuto, come ho fatto io :(

Aaaaargh!

• Provate a dissimulare il disastro, con l'aggiunta di tessuto decorativo, qua e là ...

• perché uno è un difetto, due è un motivo!
